Cycle2Work
- There are oh so many options for Voi depending on the city you are in on the Cycle2Work scheme (your workplace typically chooses the options offered to employees). Based on the variety of options, and the salary sacrifice tax implications, I have opted to link this.
RideSafe Academy
Voi have their own online academy called RideSafe, which teaches users how to use their e-bikes and e-scooters. This is broken down by country, and is available in 4 languages.
Completing the ‘Core course’ provides you 30 free minutes, which would save you £6 on riding costs, and possibly much more when you consider what an accident that might be avoided could cost you.
Voi’s Equitable Access Programmes
I have linked the Cycle2Work scheme information on Voi above. There are further schemes in place directly from Voi, both in London, and across Europe which are designed to help people who may not be able to access their e-bikes and e-scooters due to financial struggles, or schemes for residents of specific areas, check their website for the most up to date information.
Criticism of Voi e-Bikes
Voi are much smaller than Lime, and when you see criticism about e-bikes online most of this is directed towards Lime. Some of it is fair, it’s about the quality specifically of Lime e-bikes. However, because Lime are the biggest e-Bike company in London, any issues with fleet e-Bikes, whether that be Lime, Forest, Voi or otherwise, it’s often branded as a Lime issue.
This not to say that there is no criticism of Voi, or any issues with their e-bikes, but just that there is nothing specific to them. Any issue with Voi is likely similar to issues you would face with any fleet bikes.
Am I insured on a Voi e-Bike?
In some countries the answer is yes, you can find out more here. In the UK the answer is no, their e-scooters are covered by motor third-party liability insurance. Their e-bikes have no such cover.
I am not an insurance specialist, so do not take my word for this, but I have done some research on cycling/bicycle insurance and there doesn’t seem to be a reliable option for fleet rental bikes. It’s worth bearing this in mind when hiring a Voi bike.
Should anything happen to the e-bike itself you should let Voi know as soon as possible. There could be some costs associated with this, but it’s not widely publicised how much this could be.
Of course, if you are injured or in trouble, always see to this first.
Voi e-Bikes in London – Safety First
If you are looking to make use of Voi e-Bikes, whether through the hire scheme or through purchase, you should always wear a helmet. Even if you are only planning to use one occasionally, you should absolutely invest in a good helmet. In order to help you pick, we have popped 2 options below which comply with the regulations outline in the UK.
ABUS Hyban 2.0 city helmet – Coming in at less than £50, this is a great option should you not be spend a load of money but want safety.
Newlane Folding helmet – More expensive, but folds down, easily fitting into most bags, great for those who want to jump from bike to bus.
Some high-vis straps also wouldn’t go amiss where you are cycling in dull or dark conditions.
